studio rolf epitomizes a very dutch sentiment; inventive re-fashioning of a new aesthetic from a decomposing heritage. the departure, apart from it technicalities, is centered around the injection of contemporary design into an unwanted piece with emotional value; transforming that which was inherited from the past into something modified for the future, thus gaining a new and practical life. this philosophical examination of constructs and de-construction is what gives rise to this backwards / forwards thinking. the reasoning is historical and personal but it develops into a an object with a new purpose and definition by introducing contrasts; both by way of the saturated color and the unembellished surfaces. in an ironic twist one can imagine that although the strange juxtaposition makes for an eye catching novelty that breathes new life into the discarded, it could easily become an unwanted heirloom to a future generation yet again.
