the sensibilities of fashion is as fickle as the weather, but dutch artist and photographer koen hauser succeeds in being ambiguous enough. his work has a clever duplicity which alternates between avant-gardist aesthetics and social criticism. in the light of current events i find his new work ‘protest’ with ruth van beek in the hector magazine quite poignant. his video installations on the other hand bring a sneering humor clouded by the more serious and provocative biological and medical realities of the human body, as is the case of his anatomical atlas series and depictions of autism and psychological illness. his work for designer edwin oudshoorn’s collections carry a sweetness and tangible personality that moves beyond the fashion object to invoke an empathy and intimacy.
